Packing Tips

What you need to pack will be based on how long you’re staying and what you plan to do. Below is a basic list of items you may want to bring to the festival. If you’re planning on more activities than just the festival, check out our Local Attractions page first to see what additional items you might want to bring. You can also visit our FAQ page to see if this gives you more packing ideas.

  • Binoculars – Binoculars are highly recommended to help you spot birds in cover or farther out over the lake.
  • Spotting scope – While you won’t need a scope for a guided walk (the walk leader will have one), it can be helpful for spotting birds out on the lake if you’re planning on doing any birding on your own.
  • (Appropriate) Clothing – September weather can be unpredictable—showers may last 30 minutes or all day, so rain gear is always a good idea. Sturdy footwear is recommended for trails and wet conditions. Dress in layers to stay comfortable as temperatures shift. And don’t forget your hat—it’s practically part of the birder uniform! Beyond style, it helps block glare and sun, which is especially handy since sunglasses can interfere with binocular use.
  • Camera – Bring a camera with a good telephoto lens if you want to capture photos or videos of birds. Most birds won’t sit still or stay close for long, so a phone camera usually won’t cut it unless you get very lucky! Please visit the Birding Information page to read about appropriate birding ethics for photography and videography.
  • Field guide or birding app – Helps you identify species and log sightings (eBird, Merlin Bird ID, etc.).
  • Notebook or checklist – Jot down observations, lifers, and notes from guided walks.
  • Water bottle – Stay hydrated during hikes. While there will be refreshments available at the festival, packing your own (reusable) water bottle is helpful, especially if the weather is warm.
  • Folding chair or blanket – Useful for chilling out on the beach or relaxing between walks.
  • Cash or card! – For food vendors, raffles, or festival merchandise.
