Keynote – Books, Birds and Following Passion’s Path

Springbrook Gardens Park
6776 Heisley Rd, Mentor
Talk
$20
Max. Capacity: 100
This talk is an origin story; a close look at the making of a natural history writer and illustrator. It follows the threads of inspiration from formative books and influential artists in Julie’s early years, to the creation of her own books. Zickefoose tracks in intimate detail the exceptionally close interactions she has with birds under her study and care. These experiences have given her deep insight into the way birds think and see the world. “There’s no better way to come to know a bird than to be its mama. Then, to let it go and watch it learn to navigate its world and become what it was meant to be—this is how I come to understand birds: from their beginnings on outward.”…

Illustrated with the author’s own photographs, drawings and paintings, this lecture brings viewers into Julie’s world, and that of the birds she has come to know. A brood of Carolina wrens: ferociously intelligent, surprisingly affectionate, inventive and comical, consumed Julie’s summer in 2023. You’ll leave with a far greater appreciation of these small brown birds, and all birds, who have been Julie’s best instructors in the ways of the wild.

About the Speaker

Julie Zickefoose lives and works quietly on an 80-acre wildlife sanctuary in the back country of Whipple, Ohio. She is a prolific writer and painter who was an All Things Considered commentator for five years. Her illustrated work, The Bluebird Effect, was an Oprah’s Book Club pick in 2012.  After 37 years of contributing art and writing to Bird Watcher’s Digest, Julie recently became Advising Editor to the new and improved BWD Magazine. Her heavily illustrated books include Natural Gardening for Birds, Letters from Eden, The Bluebird Effect, and Baby Birds: An Artist Looks Into the Nest. Her newest book is Saving Jemima: Life and Love With a Hard-Luck Jay, the intimate story of how an orphaned bird can save a soul.

Mentor Marsh: Restoration is for the Birds

Headlands Beach State Park, Tent 1

As one of the most species-rich sites on the Great Lakes shoreline, Mentor Marsh was one of the first National Park Service-designated National Natural Landmarks in 1966. The Marsh was also named Ohio’s first State Nature Preserve in 1971 and is a National Audubon Society Important Birding Area. This 801-acre wetland is now in its 10th season of being restored after it suffered dramatically in 1966 from salt-mine tailings leaching into it. Come join us on a journey of hope showcasing an attempt to restore nature at Ohio’s 3rd largest Lake Erie coastal marsh…

By 1973 most of the swamp forest trees and marsh plants had died, and the 4-mile-long wetland basin was overtaken by reed grass (Phragmites australis), a 15’ to 24’ tall nonnative invasive plant from Eurasia. With Ohio’s largest Phragmites monoculture nearly gone, the pursuit is on to find and eradicate the last Phragmites plants standing. Native habitat restoration from the start has been focused on a “build it and they will come” goal: restore native plant structure that in turn attracts secretive marsh birds. That goal is becoming a reality as several species of Bitterns and Rails have been recently documented.

Since 2008 he’s helped acquire nearly 2,000 acres of critical habitat- the Museum currently has 66 scientific natural areas spread across 12,450 acres that contain unique natural communities, such as old growth forests, marshes, bogs, swamps and fens. These high-quality habitats- many are globally rare, together protect 260 different kinds of endangered, threatened, or rare plant and animal species, and represent the remarkable biological diversity that was once widespread throughout the region.
